Meet the Gardeners

Almost Wild is a family production built out of love for nature and protecting and nurturing our 3.5 acre ecosystem of foxes, birds, pollinators and the soil and land we grow on. We grow beautiful flowers without using chemicals or commercial fertilizers and minimize our use of plastic.

Susan

HI!  I’m Susan. I think that many of us have a secret dream of doing something new and exciting but the circumstances just aren’t right to achieve that dream.  My dream was to move back to Lawrence, Kansas and have a flower stand.

I saw my chance to realize my dream, when, after years in England and a stint in Las Vegas, my sister-in-law decided to move back to the midwest. Ann is a life-long gardener and patient, meticulous and analytical. We also share an interest in nature and protecting and nurturing our 3.5 acre ecosystem of foxes, birds, pollinators and the the land we grow on. We agreed that we wanted to grow beautiful flowers without using chemicals, commercial fertilizers and minimizing our use of plastic.

Ann

Hi! I’m Ann. After having moved around to a lot of different places for an otherwise sedentary career, it seemed like time to return to my Midwestern roots and settle in. When Susan raised her long-held idea of starting up a flower farm it sounded like an adventure in the making! I’m fortunate to have a sister-in-law-as-partner who is both very capable and more than willing to dive into new and sometimes scary ventures and get things going.

I’m a product of a family tree with gardeners on every branch, so I have always had a need to grow green things, because that’s just part of life. Even when I’ve only had room for a potted plant on my windowsill, that’s been about the first thing I’d do whenever I’ve moved to a new place. I do have to say that, wow, a whole flower farm is an entirely different way of fulfilling that need! It turns out to be one of those things where the more you do, the more there is to do. Not a bad thing if you like to keep busy. The good news is we have a small but enthusiastic team of family members all pitching in to make it all happen!

Thankfully we all share a commitment to supporting, protecting and nurturing our environment through sustainable growing practices. The learning curve is pretty steep at times, and sometimes we put in a whole lot of effort for a relatively low yield, but when I look around and see the farm abuzz with happy pollinators and abundant wildlife, I think it’s going pretty well!

C-SUITE

It takes a village and you would not be reading this today if not for Susan’s husband, Greg, since he provides website expertise and IT support. And he also built the flower stand so there’s that.

Cousin Dylan rides to the rescue whenever we need another pair of hands. And if you visit us, you may spot two other vital members of our team. Cher, Director of Security, and her frenemy, Ruby, who serves as Director of HR. Together, we keep things going at Almost Wild.
